In Spanien Tempranillo ist sie wohl die edelste, wichtigste und bekannteste Rotweinsorte im Alentejo (Portugal). Die Rebe passt sich hervorragend den unterschiedlichen Bodenbeschaffenheit und Klimaverhältnissen an. In heißen, trockenen Gebieten bringt sie oft lagerfähige, ausgewogene Weine hervor. Weine mit Aromen von Pflaume und Gewürzen. In kühlen Regionen erinnern die Aromen an Himbeere und rote Johannisbeere. Meist sind die Weine tanninreich und kraftvoll, deshalb zählt die Rebsorte zu den fünf empfohlenen Rebsorten zur Portweinherstellung.
