Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is located in a sub-region of Cima Corgo and is probably one of the most beautiful wineries of the Douro region in Portugal. Under the direction of the Amorim family and the passionate oenologists Jorge Alves and Sónia Pereira, the award-winning and worldwide highly endowed portfolio is being created on this historic estate, which includes the wines Quinta Nova Unoaked Tinto and Quinta Nova Reserva Tinto. The history of this estate lies in the terrain, the aromas and the knowledge of the people, which has been passed down from generation to generation since its foundation in 1756. The name "Quinta Nova", which means "New Farm", is derived from the names of two merging Quintas. "Nossa Senhora do Carmo" is the patron saint of the 17th century chapel on the edge of the Douro River. The history of the owners of the estate, the Amorim family, goes back to 1870, when they founded a small factory to produce cork for the port wine sector. On an area of 85 hectares, the typical and traditional grape varieties of the region are grown, including Vinha Velha, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela and Souzão. The vineyards have a first class exposition, as they are facing both south and west. This allows them to benefit from warm, dry winds, which results in a very fast ripening and high quality yeild. The Mediterranean climate is characteristic of its extreme, hot summers and cold and humid winters, with an average rainfall of 400 mm per year. The soil consists of sandstone and slate. The low humidity results in a high concentration of sugar and intense colour of the grapes. Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo produces high quality wines from traditional and regional grape varieties, using both modern production techniques and traditional methods.
