Weingut Bouchard Finlayson
Almost at the southernmost tip of South Africa is the valley "Hemel-en-Aarde" (heaven and earth). In the immediate vicinity of the sea, surrounded by picturesque mountains, it offers a first-class location for wine growing, with a frost-free, mild and favourable climate and the best suitable clay and slate soil. The boutique winery Bouchard Finlayson, founded in 1989, is dedicated to the production of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc of outstanding quality.
About one and a half hours from Cape Town, in the Walker Bay wine district, lies Bouchard Finlayson's 125 hectare estate, which is planted with only 22 hectares of vines. The remaining part is pure mountainous terrain, covered with the spectacular indigenous fynbos flora of the Western Cape. In this way, Bouchard Finlayson can ensure the protection and conservation of the mountainous area.
50% of the 22 hectares of vineyards are dedicated to the Pinot Noir variety, with which winemaker and cellar master Peter Finlayson has made a name for himself. Other varieties include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Sangiovese as well as newer varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera and Mourvèdre - a rather rare find in wine growing regions of the New World, but all varieties that are perfectly suited to the farm's terroir.
Bouchard Finlayson is known as one of South Africa's top wineries, probably due to his philosophy of focusing on the finest quality. Winemaker and cellar master Peter Finlayson is responsible for Bouchard Finlayson's wines and his passion is expressed in his unique descriptions of his wines in a wonderful, even poetic way:
