Niepoort Vinhos - Premium Weingut und Porthaus im Douro, Portugal
Niepoort Wines was founded in 1842 by Eduard Kebe. The Niepoort family, who had emigrated to Porto from the Netherlands, joined the company in 1847 and took over the entire company after the death of its founder. Today Niepoort Wines is under the management of Dirk Niepoort, the fifth-generation owner and winemaker of this traditional Douro winery. Niepoort sees an enormous potential for wine production in the Douro region and believes that, in addition to fantastic port wines, first-class table wines must also be produced here. Winemaker Dirk Niepoort also speaks of the "Treasure of the Douro" with its numerous grape varieties, which contribute to the grandeur of this region. According to the world's most renowned wine lovers, Niepoort creates more first-class wines than one would have ever thought possible! With the Niepoort Fabelhaft the big one came true. Today the Fabelhaft is one of the most famous wines in Portugal.
A little history about Dirk Niepoort
Eduard Dirk van der Niepoort was born in 1964 and discovered the world of wine during his studies in Switzerland. In 1987 Dirk joined the family business of his father Rolf Niepoort and was faced with the challenge of transforming the company into a modern, competitive one while preserving the good old traditions. Dirk's passion for wine from Portugal, combined with his humble respect and interest in Douro Terroir have defined the team spirit of Niepoort Wines over the last 20 years and form a constant inspiration and challenge for the team. Since Dirk's acquisition of the company, Niepoort Wines has established itself as a truly great producer of the finest Port wines, but also as a designer of the finest Portuguese reds and whites. Dirk himself has meanwhile become a worldwide ambassador for Portuguese wines in general and the Douro region in particular. His attention to detail, combined with a creative spirit and his commitment to the industry are legendary.
Dirk van der Niepoort's winery in Portugal
Niepoort Wines has some of the finest Quintas, in the best areas of the region. The unique nature of the Douro region's climate is due to its special location, with the Marão and Montemuro mountains serving as a barrier that protects the region from the humid westerly winds that blow in from the Atlantic. As it is located in the lower valleys, the climate in the region is characterised by very cold winters and hot dry summers. Rainfall varies and reaches its peak in December and January. As far as the origin of the soil is concerned, the composition of the entire region, but especially along the Douro river and its tributaries, is made up of slate with granite deposits in the peripheral areas.
The speciality port wine
Port wine is Niepoort's main speciality and the house is world famous for its Tawny Ports. All other port varieties such as Colheitas, Vintage Ports and Late Bottled Vintage Ports (LBV) are of course also produced. Garrafeiras (a high percentage port wine) is another speciality, which is aged in oak barrels for five years and then in 11-litre glass jugs for another two years.
Niepoort sees enormous potential for wine production in the Douro region and believes that first-class port wines should definitely be produced alongside fantastic table wines. First of all, there is the powerful, powerful and aromatically complex Robustus, whose metamorphosis from the ugly duckling to the graceful swan has surprised and amazed the world of wine over the last ten years. Furthermore, Niepoort's virtuosity knows no bounds when it comes to the refined power and richness of Batuta and the Burgundian elegance of charm.
