Verbreitet in ganz Portugal, entfaltet sich diese rote Rebsorte am besten in heißen Klimazonen auf trockenen Böden. Daher ist sie besonders im Süden Portugals, vor allem im DOC Palmela, wo sie auch Periquita genannt wird, beliebt. In ihrer Jugend erbringt Castelão fruchtige, konzentrierte Weine mit Noten von Himbeeren und roten Johannisbeeren. Mit zunehmendem Alter entwickelt sich ein geschmeidiger Charakter mit Anklängen von Zeder und Tabak.
