Quinta de S.José - Prämiertes Weingut in Portugals renommierter Douro Region
The 20 hectares of vineyards of the Quinta de S. José winery are located in the demarcated area of the Douro Valley, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and is famous throughout the world for its first-class, highly valued wines. Created in 1999 by the father and son team João Brito e Cunha and Ruy Brito e Cunha, the family project quickly made a prestigious name for itself in the wine world and today the Douro cannot be imagined without it.
Ruy and João Brito e Cunha, both father and son, have a maternal and paternal line of port wine in their pedigree, and Ruy is descended from Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira's only son. The legendary Grande Dame des Douros from the 19th century changed the face of winemaking in the region forever. With immense foresight, great business acumen and benevolent philanthropy, she shaped the rugged and remote landscape of the Douros and left an indelible legacy in the port wine sector. On his father's side, Ruy's late father (after whom he was named) was a great viticultural technician with a remarkable service record. He began his career with Ramos Pinto and Romariz, followed by 30 years as director of the Royal Oporto Wine Company and finally as a consultant for Taylor's. No wonder his grandson João, from the current Brito e Cunha generation, decided to pursue a similar career, albeit with a more contemporary focus on Douro wines.
Thus, the influence of the Douro icon, D. Antónia Ferreira, continues to inspire her descendants today. João Brito e Cunha's distinctive wines, produced at the Quinta de S. José, regularly receive international awards and prizes and receive sensational reviews from wine critics and sommeliers.
The excellent terroir of Quinta de S. José is characterised, among other things, by its bluish-grey slate soils with traces of tin - the result of tin mines that existed many years ago in the higher altitudes of the Quinta and which today contribute to the unmistakably fresh, mineral and deep character of the wines.
João Brito e Cunha is a shining example of the new generation of winegrowers and producers who have settled in the Douro and are inspiring the global scene with innovative projects and a very personal touch.
