The origin of the Madeira Wine Company began in 1913, when the two companies Welsh & Cunha and Henriques & Camara joined together and formed The Madeira Wine Association Lda. The lean years that followed led to more and more companies joining this association. By pooling production, while maintaining commercial independence in the market, the companies were able to survive. Blandy's and Leacock's also combined their interests and joined the company in 1925.
