The Thelema Sutherland Anna Chardonnay presents a remarkable terroir drive due to its chalky minerality and subtle notes of fresh-baked brioche. A seductive grapefruit essence on the palate beautifully rounds out the wood tones of this high-dollar Chardonnay, providing long-lasting and refined acidity. However, although 30 of it went through malolactic fermentation and 80% new wood was used, this is not a lush and rich wine. Linear, toasty and complex, this great drop pampers with hints of cream and vibrant fresh nuances of lemon, providing balanced enjoyment.
After establishing Thelema Mountain Vineyards as a cult winery in Stellenbosch, owner and winemaker Gyles Webb established Sutherland Vineyards as an exciting new venture in the cool-climate Elgin region. Handcrafted from the finest vineyard parcels, the Sutherland Reserve Collection is a tribute to Gyles' four beloved granddaughters. Elegant, pure and full of nuance, this wine is named after Anna Vivienne Hilton (the patient one), the first granddaughter of Gyles.

The alcoholic as well as malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels with a capacity of 228 liters per barrel, with subsequent aging of 10 months on the coarse lees. During the ten months of aging, the yeast in the wine was regularly stirred up and down (batonnage) to obtain optimal complexity in the wine. Only the 12 best barrels were then blended and bottled after thorough quality testing.
